Wakefield was commissioned by Purell to drive consumer media around flu season – a challenge with media interest waning after several years of intense coverage. We found that 3 in 10 Americans are reluctant to shake hands because they fear they will catch germs. And for good reason – 33% have witnessed someone go for a handshake with the same hand that they had just sneezed or coughed into. We also found that Americans were using the “fist bump” as a hygienic substitute to the handshake.
